Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine challenges in the professional development of teachers at the school education level. It presents a review of relevant literature on the challenges and issues faced in the Professional Development of Teachers (PDT). The results of the study showed that research on the professional development of teachers, especially on the challenges and issues in the professional development of teachers at the school education level looks likely to be a growing field of interest. This study indicates that: (a) a clear knowledge base which is essential for teachers’ professional development is not available, (b) for the continuous professional development of teachers, it necessitates for the teachers to undergo different activities including seminars, workshops, training, and exposures to other school teachers from which they could learn and grow in their professional life, and (c) Professional Development of Teachers (PDT) program is a requirement for the teachers to discharge their duties as teachers. This study is intended to contribute to understanding the various challenges in the professional development of teachers and thus support and come forth with measures to contribute to the continuous professional development of teachers to grow during their careers.
