Factors affecting the choice of Defence services as a Career: A Gender Based Analysis

Career choice entails the matching of the personal attributes of a young man with the needs and preconditions of a career. This matching is very significant in a person’s life as the best matches fetch the best achievements and peace and happiness for all. Among the school students, especially among those, who are on the verge of leaving school and seeking higher education and entering colleges, making a career choice proves to be a crucial step moving ahead in life. Choosing a career in Defence services entails studying the various career paths available in the three arms of Defence services. It is usually seen that lesser number of female students choose this career. On this backdrop the investigator felt the need to conduct this study to analyze the comparison of the factors affecting the choice of Defence services as a career between male and female respondents. The study was conducted on senior secondary students. The results revealed that male respondents are more affected by the aspirational & adventurous factor, opportunities factor, employment benefits factor, and meritocracy factor while the female respondents are more affected by the patriotic factor in the choice of Defence services as a career.
