Abstract

Girls’ participation in school cricket is influenced by a complex interaction of socio-cultural expectations, family attitudes, institutional opportunities, and access to sporting resources. Although cricket enjoys exceptional popularity in India, its integration into girls’ school-level physical education remains uneven. The present paper examines the socio-cultural and institutional factors associated with girls’ cricket participation in rural and urban educational settings. A comparative cross-sectional framework is developed using an illustrative dataset of 120 girl students, comprising 60 students from rural schools and 60 from urban schools. The analytical model considers parental encouragement, gender stereotypes, household responsibilities, sports infrastructure, physical education teacher support, and access to organized cricket opportunities. Descriptive statistics, percentage distributions, and cross-tabulations are employed to demonstrate possible patterns of participation and exclusion. Within the illustrative dataset, regular cricket participation is 30.0% among rural girls and 53.3% among urban girls. Rural students report greater limitations concerning parental encouragement and sports infrastructure, whereas institutional scheduling and competitive access remain relevant across both settings. The analysis suggests that geographical differences should not be interpreted independently of household circumstances, school resources, and institutional practices. The paper proposes an integrated framework emphasizing gender-responsive physical education, parental engagement, equitable facility allocation, and structured cricket development opportunities. Its principal contribution is a focused analytical model for examining girls’ cricket participation, extending broader rural–urban comparisons toward gender-specific mechanisms of sporting inclusion. The numerical findings are illustrative and require validation through actual field research.
